From preparation to finished surface

These photos follow one hall bathroom from start to finish. The before shot shows small white square floor tile, beige wall tile around a white tub and an oak vanity. After demolition the tub wall is open to the framing, with old wallboard and tile debris on the floor. The finished room has large white-and-gray veined porcelain on the tub walls up to the ceiling, a matching veined floor and a dark vanity with a light counter.

For a similar rebuild, opening the tub wall to the studs lets the installer check framing, plumbing and insulation, then put up new backer board and waterproofing before any tile goes on. Large-format wall tile needs flat walls and a planned layout so cuts at the tub rim, corners and ceiling come out even. Materials, the waterproofing system and fixture choices are confirmed for each project.

Installation details to note

  1. The old tile, wallboard and tub-wall finish were removed down to the framing.
  2. Large white-and-gray veined porcelain covers the tub walls from the rim to the ceiling.
  3. The floor uses a matching veined tile in a much larger format than the original small squares.
  4. A white alcove tub sits below the new surround, with tile meeting it on three walls.
