What this covers

Removing tile is loud, heavy and dusty, and the way it is done affects everything that follows. We seal off the room, protect paths through the house and break tile out in sections so the subfloor underneath is not gouged more than it has to be.

Once the old tile is up, we can see what it was hiding: cracked slabs, soft plywood near a toilet or tub, or old adhesive that will not bond to new mortar. We show you what we find, then grind, patch and level so the new floor starts flat.

  • Ceramic, porcelain and stone tile removal
  • Mortar beds and old thinset ground down
  • Backer board and damaged plywood replaced
  • Self-leveling compound on uneven floors
  • Crack-isolation and uncoupling membranes
  • Debris hauled away the same day

Tile Removal & Floor Prep questions

How messy is tile removal?

It is one of the dustiest parts of a remodel. We seal the room with plastic, cover paths, use dust-extracting tools where possible and clean up at the end of every day.

Will removal damage my subfloor?

Some surface damage is common, especially with old mortar beds. We repair it as part of the job and show you anything that needs more than a patch.

How long does removal take?

A bathroom floor is often half a day to a day. Mortar beds and large areas take longer, and leveling compound needs time to cure before tile.

Can you remove tile from walls without damaging drywall?

Tile on drywall usually takes the paper face with it, so we normally replace that section with new backer board, which is the right base for new tile anyway.

What if there is asbestos in old flooring?

Some older floor tile and adhesive can contain asbestos. Tell us the age of your home and we will talk through testing before any removal begins.

Can new tile go down right after removal?

Once the floor is repaired, leveled and cured, yes. We schedule removal and installation as one project so you are not waiting between two crews.
