A shower is a waterproofing job first and a tile job second. Grout and tile shed most water, but moisture still passes through, so we build a continuous membrane behind and under the tile and treat every seam, corner, valve, niche and the drain as part of one system.
The floor is sloped to the drain before tile goes down, and we pick a tile size that can follow that slope. Niches and benches are planned with the layout so grout lines line up with their edges instead of ending in thin slivers.
Niche, bench, valve and drain positions set with the tile layout.
Old tile and backer removed and framing checked for rot.
Walls boarded and the floor sloped toward the drain.
Continuous membrane, sealed at seams, corners and penetrations.
Tile set to the layout, then grouted once the mortar cures.
Movement joints caulked and the shower checked before handover.

Waterproofing, mortar and grout each need time to cure before the next layer goes on. Rushing those steps is the most common reason showers leak or grout cracks.
No. Grout and tile resist water but do not stop it. The waterproof membrane behind and under the tile is what protects the wall and floor.
Often, yes. It depends on the floor structure and how much the shower area can be recessed. We check this at the walkthrough before quoting.
Smaller tiles or mosaics follow the slope to the drain more easily and add grip. Larger tiles can work with a linear drain and a single-direction slope.
We focus on the tile and waterproofing, and we leave the right blocking and edges for your glass installer, or coordinate with one you choose.
Use a non-abrasive, pH-neutral cleaner, squeegee or ventilate after use, and keep an eye on the flexible sealant at inside corners. Replace it if it separates; do not fill it with grout.
