From preparation to finished surface

These photos show a hallway floor in large polished white tile with gold and gray veining. A round medallion sits in the middle of the hall: a dark brown outer ring around a compass rose with beige and brown star points. In the wider view the floor meets carpet in the next room, and a few tools and boxes are still in place.

An inset medallion has to be centered on the space it belongs to, usually the hall or a doorway line, and the surrounding tile has to be cut precisely around the circle so the joint stays even. The medallion and field tile also need to finish at the same height. Medallion size, its position in the room and the cut layout are decided for each project.

Installation details to note

  1. A circular compass rose medallion is inset into the hall floor.
  2. Large white marble-look tile with gold-gray veining fills the rest of the hall.
  3. The field tile is cut around the medallion ring with a narrow, even joint.
  4. The tile meets carpet at the doorway of the adjoining room.
